The Curtis Gallery in Monterey, CA presents the Edward S. Curtis ‘Collector’s Exhibition’, a presentation of Curtis’ photogravure plates, representing the images of tribes visited by Curtis during his preparations for his master work – The North American Indian – The Vanishing Race.
These one-of-a-kind, historical and unique copper plates represent the photogravure technology that preceded film, and, because of these various attributes, have become important collectible choices. Such is illustrated by a Curtis photogravure plate auction by Sotheby’s in September 2014.
There is much written and available about the life and times of Edward S. Curtis. We shall not attempt here to restate his biographical history. However, we shall simply relate our appreciation for his dedication to his work, his passion for his subject matter, his energy and ‘stick-to-it’ purpose to complete his endeavor.
His life work, and the consequences of that life and work, as well as the other participants along the way, have made this time possible – the availability of his enormous collection of photogravure plates for collection by enthusiasts.
