Tano

In the Tewa language, the word “Tano” means “of the sun” or “southern.” Some have used the name Tano to refer to the pre-colonial Pueblo society who were the ancestors of the Tewa and others have used it to refer to specific Southern Tewa bands that migrated to join neighboring tribes. Curtis created three (3) copper photogravure plates from his visits with the Tano and two (2) remain available to collectors today.
