The Teton Sioux, also known as the Lakota, occupied areas near present-day Pierre, South Dakota. Currently, they reside in North and South Dakota. Curtis created a total of ninety-six (96) copper photogravure plates during his visits with the Teton Sioux and sixty (60) remain available to collectors today.
