A Zuni Girl

Portfolio plate number 613 of “A Zuni Girl” was taken by Edward S. Curtis in 1903. Her hair is cut short and she is wearing a woven blanket. She is embellished in necklaces of various beads and squash blossoms as well as a silver bangle and large ring. The Zuni people are known for their beautiful silver and turquoise jewelry which they started creating in the late 1800’s. Another popular art of the Zuni people is the carving of animal fetishes. These are carved out of stone or other natural materials and are said to have spiritual components and possess special powers of healing, luck, and protection.
